“Trellis’s programs bring purpose, inclusivity, and learning, which are always beneficial to one’s well-being. Our students are so capable and proud of their accomplishments.” - Jamie Littmann, Inman Middle School Special Education Teacher
The Ability Garden at Callanwolde supports Trellis’s programs specific to individuals with differing cognitive and physical abilities. Special education students from Atlanta Public Schools have the unique opportunity to engage in horticulture projects and exposure to nature each month. The Ability Garden programs teach children to experience a deeper connection to the natural world while encouraging active learning, listening, and focused attention on fun, purposeful activities.
During a recent fall session, one young student was apprehensive about participating due to a fear of getting her hands dirty, as sensory processing disorder can be a common condition for students on the autism spectrum. As she began to take in the array of beautiful dried flowers and leaves, little by little, she became engaged in selecting her favorites and gluing them onto wax paper to create a beautiful sun catcher. She was so proud of what she had created and the smile on her face shows the pure joy and pride in her efforts.
